What Makes A Great Chest Workout?

by admin on October 24, 2009

A great chest workout should incorporate a range of muscle building and shaping activities. Many people become focused on how much weight they can push but this is certainly not the only way you can build muscle in the chest area.

If you are looking to shape the chest you may consider trying some dumbell flys or incline flys. This involves lying down on your back with your knees shoulder width apart. Keep your shoulders and back on the bench. With the weights in your hands, place your hands near your chest. Keep the elbows slightly bent. Push up with the weights to the starting position where the weights are above the chest. Open the arms out so that the weights are lowered towards the floor in an arc type motion and bring them up again.

The same chest workout can be performed on an incline, called an incline fly. Lower the bench so that it sits are a 45 degree angle and perform the exercise.

For body shaping, this chest workout doesn’t need to be done with the maximum amount of weight that you can lift. Aim to lift 80% of your maximum and perform slow and controlled repetitions of the movement. Perform four sets of 20 repetitions to get the most out of this exercise. During the contraction, squeeze and hold the pectoral muscles together to get the most out of this chest workout.
